Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #220

In some circles polygyny seems to be glorified so much that marriage to one wife feels ordinary. Is that right?

A marriage to one wife that is well cared for is the way of life of most Muslims and no less honourable in the sight of Allah. Allah says: “Then if you fear that you will not be just, then (marry) only one” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:3), showing that one wife is a praiseworthy choice when justice is in doubt. The honour of a marriage is measured by God-consciousness, love and rights fulfilled, not by the number of wives. Do not let the tone of some people make you feel lesser. Focus your energy on building a home of tranquillity (sakinah), because that is the real goal. See rights of husband and wife.
