💍 Khitbah & engagement · #105
Can a man propose by WhatsApp message alone, without a family delegation?
A proposal by message is not wrong in law, but it is weak as a serious step. Khitbah is a request to marry, and the Shariah does not fix its form. But a proposal addressed directly to the woman without involving her wali is easily misunderstood, hard to prove and can be quietly withdrawn. If you receive such a message, you can reply politely and ask him to contact your father or wali. For example: ‘I appreciate your good intention; please speak to my father directly.’ A man who is truly ready usually does not mind coming with his family. See Khitbah.
