🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #36
Should a child be sent to a tahfiz school, and what should be checked first?
It is not obligatory; it is a good option if it suits the child's interest and ability and the school is safe and registered.
The Prophet ﷺ said that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027). That virtue can be attained at any school, including through Quran classes at home or at the mosque. Before enrolling, check: is the school registered with the state religious authority or the Ministry of Education; the safety of the building and hostel; the ratio of wardens to pupils; the discipline policy (avoid those that use harsh punishment); and whether academic subjects are also taught. Visit in person, talk to other parents and make sure the child can contact you. Do not send a child there as a punishment. If a child shows signs of abuse, act at once. See Educating the family.
