🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #49
I am a father busy with work. How can I play my part in raising my children?
Quality and consistency matter more than the number of hours: a small, regular time each day, being present at important moments and an example the children can see.
The Quran records conversations between fathers and children — Luqman counselling his son (Luqman 31:13), the Prophet Ibrahim discussing with Ismaʿil (as-Saffat 37:102) and Yusuf telling his father his dream (Yusuf 12:4) — a sign that a father's role is not just earning a living. Every man is a guardian of his family (Sahih al-Bukhari 893). Suggestions: pray Maghrib or ʿIsha together when at home; ten phone-free minutes with each child before bed; take them to school once a week; video calls when travelling for work; and attend important school events. If you have more than one wife, plan this time for each household fairly. See Educating the family.
