Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #15

Why does the source of income matter more than the amount?

Because the standing of one's own earnings is mentioned specifically.
The Prophet ﷺ said: no one eats any food better than what he earns by the work of his own hands — and he mentioned that the Prophet Dawud a.s. ate from the work of his hands. Al-Baqarah 2:188 forbids consuming the property of others by wrongful means. Al-Baqarah 2:267 commands giving from the good things you have earned, not from what you yourselves would not accept. In assessing one's means for polygyny, this means the income declared must be the true income.
