My in-laws in Indonesia sometimes start fasting and celebrate Eid on different days from us. Which should we follow?

Follow the decision of the religious authorities of the country you are in on that day. The start of Ramadan and Syawal can differ between countries because of their own methods and announcements, and such differences have long existed in the ummah. If you are fasting in Malaysia, follow the announcement in Malaysia. If you are there at the start or end of Ramadan, ask the religious affairs office about the best course, especially if your number of fasting days ends up fewer or more. Do not make this difference a topic of debate with your in-laws. Wish them a happy Eid on their day of celebration, and celebrate together when your day comes. See Muslim families in Indonesia.
