Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #246

I like to get up at night for worship, but my spouse wants time together. How do we balance this?

Night worship is excellent, but your spouse also has rights that must be fulfilled, and the two can be balanced. The Prophet ﷺ reminded a Companion who went to extremes in worship that “your wife has a right over you” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199). Plan so there is time for closeness and time for qiyam, without one cancelling the other. Discuss with your spouse a schedule that suits you both. Worship that neglects the family's rights is not complete worship. Indeed, treating your spouse well is also rewarded. Look for a middle way that pleases Allah and brings peace to your home. See rights of husband and wife.
