Why is it important to write a will (wasiat), and how can I start?
Writing a will is a responsibility that eases matters for your heirs and prevents disputes after you are gone. A will is not a sign of despair or of wishing for death, but a wise, recommended preparation. Start by listing your assets and liabilities, then state your wishes for what is permitted, such as ongoing charity (amal jariah) within the allowed limit. A will cannot change the heirs' shares fixed by Islamic law; to make sure it is valid and in order, refer to the religious affairs office or Amanah Raya. Appoint a trustworthy executor and tell your family where the document is kept. Review your will when your life circumstances change. See managing an estate.
