My child is jealous and rejects my new spouse. How do I handle it?

A child's rejection of a new spouse usually comes from fear of losing his place in your heart, not real hatred. Reassure your child, in word and deed, that your love for him is not shared out or reduced. Keep spending one-to-one time with him as before. Do not force closeness between your child and your new spouse; let it grow on its own. Avoid punishing your child for being jealous or comparing him with others. Ask your new spouse to be patient and not take the rejection to heart. If the tension persists and affects your child, a family counsellor can help your whole family adjust. Time and calm usually melt it away. See counselling.
