How do I teach a young child to apologise sincerely when they have done wrong?
Young children learn to apologise when they understand that it repairs a relationship, not as words forced out of them. Wait until they are calm, then help them see the effect: ‘Your friend is sad because their toy was snatched.’ Teach a simple phrase to say and one kind action to put it right, such as giving the toy back. Do not force an apology they do not understand, because that trains them to pretend. The most effective thing is example: when you wrong them, apologise sincerely so that they learn from your example. Praise their courage in admitting a mistake. In time, apologising becomes a habit of the heart, not just the tongue. See educating the family.
