🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #308
What is the difference between ghirah towards my spouse and the forbidden envy (hasad)?
Ghirah is a sense of guarding what Allah has entrusted to you, while hasad is hating to see the blessings Allah has given to others. Ghirah centres on protecting the honour of your spouse and family; it is praiseworthy when kept in proportion. Hasad, on the other hand, wishes for other people's blessings to disappear, and it is blameworthy because it objects to how Allah has apportioned things. A simple sign: ghirah moves you to guard what is yours, hasad moves you to begrudge what is others'. Examine your heart: do you want to protect, or to seize and spoil? If the feeling leans towards hasad, seek Allah's protection and pray for good for the person you envy. See relationship psychology.
