What does asabah mean, which is often mentioned when dividing an estate?
Asabah are the heirs who take the remainder of the estate after the heirs with fixed shares have received theirs. Faraid (Islamic inheritance) sets fixed proportions for some heirs, such as the wife, mother and father. What is left is then given to the asabah, the nearest male relatives on the father's side, for example a son. When both sons and daughters are present, they share that remainder: a male two shares, a female one share. If nothing remains, the asabah may receive nothing. Understanding this term helps a family read the faraid certificate without misunderstanding. Ask the court officer to explain each line of the certificate before you sign any agreement. See term.
