What documents do we need to gather before applying to distribute an estate?
Gather three kinds of documents: proof of death, proof of the heirs' relationship, and proof of assets. Proof of death is the death certificate or burial permit. Proof of relationship includes the identity cards of all heirs, the deceased's marriage certificate with each wife, and the children's birth certificates. Proof of assets covers land titles, house sale-and-purchase agreements, bank statements, vehicle registration, savings and investment statements, and a list of debts. Appoint a meticulous family member to put copies together in one file, and share that checklist with all the heirs. Actual requirements differ by agency and state, so check with the relevant office before you go. See checklists.
