May a Muslim man marry a Christian or Jewish woman?
The Qur'an permits a Muslim man to marry a chaste woman of the People of the Book, but scholars set conditions and many advise avoiding it.
The Shafi'i school requires that the woman be descended from those who followed that religion before it was abrogated, a condition hard to establish today. Concerns also involve the children's religious upbringing. In Malaysia, state Enactments only register marriages between Muslims, so the partner usually has to embrace Islam first. Refer to Interfaith & converts.

Difference of madhhab. The majority of Hanafis, Malikis and Hanbalis accept present-day People of the Book with the ruling of makruh (disliked), without a lineage condition as strict as the Shafi'i one.
