📜 Akad nikah · #23

May the mahr be Qur'an memorisation, a set of prayer garments or an umrah package?

Yes, as long as the mahr is something of value whose benefit can be handed over to the wife.
The Prophet ﷺ married a Companion who had no wealth with the mahr of teaching the surahs of the Qur'an he had memorised. So teaching the Qur'an, or items such as a set of prayer garments, gold or an umrah package, may be given as mahr. A mere recitation of the Qur'an at the ceremony with no benefit to the wife is not sufficient according to many scholars; what counts is the teaching. In Malaysia, make sure the mahr meets the state's minimum rate. See Mahr.
Difference of madhhab. The Hanafi school does not accept teaching the Qur'an as mahr and requires the customary mahr (mahr mithil) instead.
