🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #57
What are the general steps and documents needed to apply to marry in Malaysia?
In general: attend the pre-marriage course, take the health screening your state requires, fill in the application to marry at the religious office, and obtain permission to marry before the contract; the details differ between states.
Act 303 requires an application for permission to marry to be made to the Registrar (s.16), and a marriage may not be solemnised without that permission (s.19); state enactments have matching provisions. Usual documents: identity card, the pre-marriage course certificate, screening results, photographs, forms signed by the guardian, and for a divorcee or widow(er), the divorce certificate or the spouse's death certificate. If the couple are from different states, permission from each state may be needed. Start a few months early because courses and appointments take time. Check the latest list on your state religious office's website. See State enactments and Checklist.
