My late husband's family accuses me of hiding his property. How do I defend myself?

Answer the accusation with transparency, not anger; complete documents are your best defence. Accusations like this hurt, especially while you are still grieving. Prepare a list of all your late husband's assets that you know of, along with bank statements, titles and other documents. Clearly separate property that is your own, such as personal savings, mahr and gifts, with proof of ownership. Offer to share that list with all the heirs, or hand it to the estate officer so a neutral party checks it. Allah says: “O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12). If the accusations continue, let the Syariah Court assess the evidence. See guide for widows.
