Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #353

I work full time just like my husband but am expected to do almost all the housework. Is this fair?

When both spouses work outside the home, fairness requires that the housework is shared too, not borne entirely by one person. Housework is not the duty of one gender, but a shared trust that can be arranged according to each person's time and ability. Discuss each person's real load honestly, then divide the tasks clearly and workably. Allah commands: “Help ye one another in righteousness and piety” (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:2), and the household is the first place for that mutual help. Avoid keeping score, and review the arrangement when circumstances change. If the sense of unfairness persists, consult a family counsellor. See duties of husband and wife.
