Why is debt considered a grave danger to a household?

Because its effect is not only financial.
Aishah r.a. related that the Prophet ﷺ would pray in his prayer for refuge from all sin and from debt. When asked why he so often sought refuge from debt, he answered: when a man is in debt, he speaks and lies, and he promises and breaks his promise. That is the damage — it corrodes honesty within the home. In another supplication he sought refuge from anxiety, grief, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt and being overpowered by others. See The finances of two households.
