What is the ruling on the custom of bersanding (sitting in state on the dais)?
Bersanding as a custom is in principle permitted if the couple are already lawfully married, cover their aurat and nothing in it conflicts with the Shariah; it becomes problematic when it involves exposing the aurat, waste or superstitious practices.
The basic ruling on customs is permissibility unless they conflict with the Shariah. A couple who have completed the contract may lawfully sit together, and announcing a marriage is encouraged. Things to avoid: tight or revealing clothing, excessive make-up and mixing before male guests, practices such as scattering yellow rice in the belief that it wards off misfortune, and dais costs paid for with debt (al-Isra' 17:26–27). Some couples choose not to bersanding, and that too is fine. Discuss with the family so custom is respected without breaching the Shariah. See The wedding feast.
