What is the ruling on nikah mut'ah (contract marriage)?
Nikah mutʿah, that is a marriage with a fixed term, is forbidden and void according to all four Sunni schools.
It was once permitted in the early days of Islam in certain circumstances, then forbidden until the Day of Judgement. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed Allah has forbidden it until the Day of Judgement." Nikah mutʿah does not give the rights to maintenance, inheritance and protection that are the purpose of marriage. In Malaysia, this practice is not recognised and may attract action under state Syariah law. See Nikah siri, misyar & urfi.
