My husband is studying further abroad and our family lives on a limited scholarship. How do we manage maintenance (nafkah)?

Maintenance is measured according to ability, so living modestly on a scholarship is not a sign of the husband's failure. Allah says: “Let the one who has means spend according to his means” (Surah at-Talaq 65:7). List the basic needs first: rent, food, transport and health. Compare prices at local markets, cook at home, and make use of free facilities for students and families. If the wife is permitted to work and she is willing, her income remains hers; her contribution to the household is a kindness, not an obligation. Avoid going into debt to match other people's lifestyles. Discuss finances openly every month so that no one bottles up resentment. See maintenance.
