Since our child's divorce, we (the grandparents) are being prevented from seeing our grandchildren. Do we have rights?
Grandparents should be allowed contact with grandchildren for the sake of family ties and the child's welfare; if blocked without reason, they can talk through a mediator or seek an order from the court through the child's mother or father.
Allah condemns those who sever family ties (Muhammad 47:22–23), and a child is entitled to know both sides of the family. Act 303 s.87 allows the court to attach conditions to custody orders, including access. Often the most effective route is to ask your own child (the grandchild's mother or father) to include time with the grandparents in the visiting schedule. Avoid speaking badly of the former son- or daughter-in-law in front of the grandchildren, as this is often why contact is blocked. Courteous relations with the former in-law open the door to the grandchildren. See Custody & lineage.
