🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #29
I was only joking, but my spouse was hurt. Are jokes and sarcasm like this wrong?
Joking is permitted and even liked, but if it belittles, insults or mocks a spouse's weaknesses, it falls under what is forbidden.
The Prophet ﷺ joked with his wives; he even raced ʿAisha r.a. and joked about who had won (Sunan Abu Dawud 2578). Yet Allah forbids believers to ridicule others and to call them by offensive nicknames (al-Hujurat 49:11). The measure is not the intention "I was only joking" but the effect on the listener. Jokes about weight, the spouse's family, past failures or their cooking in front of others easily wound. If your spouse says it hurts, stop and apologise; do not add "you are too sensitive". A good joke makes both of you laugh, not just one. See Emotional communication.
