Before thinking about divorce, what help should we try first?

Divorce should ideally be the last resort after serious effort, not the first reaction when you feel stuck. Start with an honest talk between the two of you about what really hurts and what you both want. If you are stuck, get marriage counselling, and involve fair arbitrators (hakam) from both families if needed. Sulh (mediation) at the Syariah Court also helps reach an agreement without a long trial. Give these efforts time to bear fruit, because some wounds take time to heal. But if anything endangers safety, that comes first. Intend every step to save the marriage, and leave the outcome to Allah. See trials in a marriage.
