Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #65

My future husband is an only child who fully supports his parents. What should we discuss before marrying?

Discuss honestly where you will live, how money is divided and the role of caring for his parents, because that responsibility will continue and grow.
Kindness to parents is Allah's command (al-Isra' 17:23), and a man devoted to his parents is usually a sign of good character. Yet a wife's maintenance remains obligatory and cannot be set aside (at-Talaq 65:7), and she is entitled to suitable housing (at-Talaq 65:6). Important questions: will his parents live with you; what share of income goes to them; who will care for them when they become frail; and what happens if his mother's wishes clash with his wife's? Your willingness to help as a kindness is very valuable, but it should be agreed, not assumed. See the question on a husband putting his mother or wife first.
