Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #116

My future husband and I live in different states. Where should the marriage application be made?

Usually each party needs to get confirmation from their own state, and the akad is arranged by the authority in the state where it takes place. The actual procedure differs between states. Some states ask the man to get confirmation from where he lives before the application is sent to the woman's state. Ask both state Islamic religious affairs offices early about the order of documents. Keep a copy of every signed form. Allow extra time for sending documents between states. Appoint one of you as coordinator so no document goes missing. See procedure by state.
