Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #112

My child has started copying the style and talk of friends who are not a good influence. How do I handle it?

Friends' influence is strong at this age, so counter it with a stronger relationship at home, not just bans. Do not immediately run his friends down, because that makes him defend them; instead, discuss specific behaviours and their effects. Get to know who his friends are and invite them home so that you can observe and guide. Strengthen his sense of self: teach him to be proud of the family's values and brave enough to be different. Spend time with him so that home is more appealing than outside influences. Teach him to choose friends who encourage good. Pray that he is protected from bad influences. See educating the family.
