Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #147

My teenager has started following religious views from social media whose soundness I doubt. What should I do?

Value your child's interest in religion, then guide him to evaluate his sources. Religious enthusiasm in the teenage years is a blessing, but social media is full of views with no basis in knowledge, whether too harsh or too dismissive. Do not hastily belittle the figures he follows, because that closes his ears. Instead, teach him to ask: who is this person, what is his scholarly background, and what is his evidence? Allah teaches us: “if there comes to you a wicked person with news, then verify it” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6). Introduce him to reliable teachers or websites, and learn together with him. If complex questions of ruling arise, refer to your state mufti's office. See educating the family.
