🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #62
Is it fair to burden the eldest child with looking after younger siblings and doing housework?
Helping the family is good, but turning the eldest into a "second parent" who loses study time, rest and childhood is unfair.
The Prophet ﷺ required fairness between children (Sahih al-Bukhari 2587), and Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (al-Baqarah 2:286). The main responsibility for young children remains with the parents. Signs of overload: the eldest is often tired, school results drop, there is no time with friends, or they are scolded when a sibling misbehaves. Share tasks among all the children by age, give the eldest protected free time, and thank them for their help. Do not make them the person you unload marital problems on. In single-parent families this burden is more common; look for help from relatives or the community. See Educating the family.
