Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #66

Our eldest child has changed and become jealous since the new baby was born. How do we reassure them?

An eldest child's jealousy of a new baby is a normal feeling that needs to be accepted, not shouted at. The attention that used to be theirs alone is now shared, and they do not yet know how to express it except through behaviour. Set aside special time for them every day, even briefly, so that they are sure your love has not lessened. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5997), so treat their feelings with compassion, not warnings. Involve them in caring for the baby with small tasks and praise their help. Avoid comparing them with the baby or blaming them for being jealous. See educating the family.
