Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #156

My teenager feels his father's new family gets more of his time. What should I do?

That feeling needs to be heard, not denied, because fairness in time and attention is truly every child's right. Teenagers are sensitive to who is given more, and feeling neglected can wound their self-esteem. Do not belittle the feeling by saying he is making a fuss. Encourage him to tell his father directly and respectfully, or pass on his wish if he is not yet ready to. A father should be fair: the Prophet ﷺ commanded “act justly among your children” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2587), including in time and attention, not only money. Help him see that his worth does not depend on comparisons. If the hurt runs deep, you can get help from a counsellor. See children in polygyny.
