Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #97

My child gets very upset when he fails or loses. How do I help him cope?

Your job is not to remove your child's disappointment, but to stay with him as he learns to get back up. Acknowledge his feelings first: ‘Daddy understands you are sad because you lost just now.’ Do not belittle it or rush to correct him. Once he is calm, help him see what can be learned and tried again. Tell him that failure is part of learning, and that with Allah what counts is the effort. Avoid comparing him with other children or scolding him for losing. Teach him to make du'a and put his trust in Allah (tawakal) after making an effort. A child who learns to accept defeat calmly grows into a resilient person. See educating the family.
