Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #96

My other siblings refuse to contribute to the cost of caring for our parents even though they can afford it. What should I do?

Supporting parents in need is an obligation on children who are able, and it is shared according to each one's means. Start with an honest discussion, not a quarrel; sometimes people avoid it because no one has asked them clearly. Set reasonable contributions according to each person's means and record them for transparency. If someone still refuses even though they are able, carry on with your own devotion and leave their hearts to Allah; your reward is not lessened. For legally binding claims, advice can be obtained from the religious affairs office or legal aid bodies. Do not cut family ties over money. See maintenance of parents.
