Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #131

I plan to practise polygyny. What should I arrange about my property and will before marrying again?

Arrange your property now, so that your death does not one day leave two households at odds. List all your assets and debts, and note which ones came from joint effort with your existing wife, because that may be her right as jointly acquired property (harta sepencarian). Settle the status of each wife's home: whose name it is in, and who pays for it. Update the nominees on your savings and takaful, and write a will (wasiat) appointing an executor both sides can accept. This transparency is part of the fairness that is required. Allah says: “Then if you fear that you will not be just, then (marry) only one” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:3). Discuss all of this with your existing wife, and get advice from a Syariah lawyer. See two-household finances.
