🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #34
What etiquette of eating together as a family can be practised every day?
Among the basic etiquettes are saying the name of Allah, eating with the right hand, taking what is nearest, not criticising the food and eating together.
The Prophet ﷺ corrected a boy whose hand roamed around the dish: mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand and eat from what is near you (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376). He also never criticised food; if he liked it he ate, and if not he left it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5409). Eating together is a daily chance to talk without phones, ask the children how they are and appreciate whoever cooked. Do not turn the dining table into a place for scolding or interrogation. In a polygamous family, eating together during each household's turn also helps the children feel like one family. See Daily etiquette.
