May a father force his daughter to marry?
In the Shafi'i school, the father or grandfather is regarded as wali mujbir for a virgin daughter, but this power is bound by strict conditions and asking the daughter's permission is still required.
The conditions include: no enmity between father and daughter, the prospective husband is of suitable standing and able to pay the mahr, and the mahr is not less than the customary mahr (mahr mithil). The Prophet ﷺ said that a virgin's permission must be sought, and he annulled the marriage of Khansa' binti Khidam, who was married off without her consent. In Malaysia, state enactments require the consent of both parties before a marriage is registered. See The marriage wali.

Difference between schools. The Hanafi school does not recognise compulsion (ijbar) over an adult woman; her consent is required, whether she is a virgin or previously married.
