Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #105

Why doesn't my child follow my advice even though I keep reminding him?

Children copy what they see you do far more strongly than what they hear you say. Allah rebukes: “why do you say that which you do not do?” (Surah as-Saff 61:2), so first check whether you yourself practise what you teach. If you want him to pray early, he needs to see you pray early; if you want him to be honest and calm, show it. Lecture less and add more example and things done together. Explain the reason behind an instruction, not just give orders. Children change faster when they see their parents living by the values they teach. See educating the family.
