My husband is bankrupt. Can he apply for permission to take another wife?
He can file an application, but his chances are very slim, because the court must be satisfied that he can support all his wives and dependants. Bankruptcy usually means his income is supervised and his debts exceed his means. That is hard to reconcile with the requirement of being able to provide maintenance for two households. His status must also be stated honestly in the application; hiding it can be an offence. As his wife, you can put evidence of his true financial position before the court. If you are under pressure, get advice from a Syarie lawyer or the Legal Aid Bureau. See declaring debts.
