A Muslim couple living in Singapore want to divorce. Where is the case filed?
Muslim divorces in Singapore are handled by the Syariah Court of Singapore under the Administration of Muslim Law Act (AMLA); a talak pronounced outside court must be brought to the court for registration.
The forms of divorce handled include talak, khulʿ, fasakh and taʿliq divorce, and parties usually have to go through a counselling or support programme before the case proceeds. Singapore's Syariah Court can decide mut'ah, ʿiddah maintenance, custody and the division of matrimonial assets. For Malaysians whose marriage is registered in Malaysia, the divorce must also be registered or confirmed in their home state so that Malaysian records are updated. Allah tells us to part in a good way (al-Baqarah 2:229); follow the process in both countries. Check current requirements on the Syariah Court of Singapore's website. See Singapore.
