Should we write a joint agreement on how to raise our children after the divorce?

Yes; a short written agreement helps prevent misunderstandings and gives children a sense of stability. Include the matters that most often cause conflict: the visiting schedule, school holidays and Hari Raya, maintenance (nafkah), religious education, and use of gadgets. Also set how major decisions will be made, such as a change of school or medical treatment. Write in simple language, without blaming anyone. Allah says: “by mutual consent and consultation between the two” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:233). Matters that need legal force, such as custody (hadhanah) and maintenance, can be recorded as a consent order at the Syariah Court. Review the agreement every year as the children grow. See educating the family.
