Q&A › Existing wife & prospective wife

🤝 Existing wife & prospective wife · #195

Other people like to backbite my co-wife in front of me. How should I respond?

Do not join in that backbiting, even if your heart may whisper agreement, because a guarded tongue protects your own dignity. Allah says: “nor speak ill of each other behind their backs” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12). You can gently change the subject or mention one good thing about your co-wife to end the conversation. Staying silent rather than agreeing is enough if it is hard to speak up. Remember, people who like to bring you bad stories about your co-wife may well carry your stories to her too. Guarding your tongue guards your heart from piling up resentment. See co-wife relations.
