Every time I bring up something that bothers me, it turns straight into a fight. How do I start?
How you open in your first three sentences usually decides whether it becomes a discussion or a fight. Start with your feelings and a request, not an accusation: ‘I feel lonely when we don't get time to talk; can we spend a little time together tonight?’ Avoid opening with ‘it's always like this’ or ‘you never ever’, because that invites your spouse to defend themselves. Choose just one issue and a calm time. Say what you want, not only what you dislike. A gentle opening invites cooperation, while an attack invites defence. See ways to win hearts.
