A husband wants to hold a lavish reception for his second marriage. Is that appropriate?
A walimah for a second marriage is still a sunnah and good for announcing the marriage, but a large, showy event can hurt the first wife and her children; modesty fits better with justice and kindness.
The Prophet ﷺ told a man to hold a walimah even if only with one sheep (Sahih al-Bukhari 5167), showing that what matters is the announcement, not luxury. Allah forbids waste (al-Isra' 17:26–27) and commands kindness and justice (an-Nahl 16:90). Consider: does the cost affect the maintenance of the first wife and children; will it be posted widely so that the first wife's children are taunted by friends; and has the first wife been informed respectfully? A small event with close family and neighbours is enough, and the money saved is better used to secure the ability to support two households. See The wedding feast.
