⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #139

A married man has asked our daughter to marry him across the border. What should we check?

Check whether he is willing to take the lawful path; a serious man will apply for the Syariah Court's permission, not invite her to marry abroad quietly. Ask him directly: does his wife know, has the application been filed, and where will your daughter live. Evasive answers are a warning sign. Explain the consequences to your daughter: a marriage that is hard to register, shaky rights to maintenance and inheritance, and children who may be hard to register under their father's name. As wali (guardian), the father can insist that the marriage must go through lawful channels. Keep a warm relationship with your daughter so that she does not act on her own. See guide for a prospective second wife.
