Is the marriage sermon obligatory before the contract?
The marriage sermon is recommended (sunat), not a pillar; the contract is valid without it.
The Prophet ﷺ taught the khutbah al-hajah, which begins with praise of Allah, the testimony of faith, and recitation of the verses on taqwa (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:102, an-Nisa' 4:1 and al-Ahzab 33:70–71). This sermon reminds the couple of taqwa and responsibility. In Malaysia, the marriage officiant usually gives a short sermon and advice before the contract. Couples are encouraged to listen attentively, as it summarises the trust of married life. See Marriage contract.
