Do a stepmother and stepchild inherit from each other?
No; a step-relationship arises through marriage, not lineage (nasab), so a stepmother and stepchild do not inherit from each other. A stepmother inherits from her husband, the child's father. A stepchild inherits from his own father and mother. This relationship is still honourable: a stepchild becomes mahram, and love built over years is precious in Allah's sight. If you want to leave something to a stepchild you love, or the other way round, use a gift during your lifetime (hibah) or a will (wasiat) of no more than one third of the estate. Write that wish clearly and tell the family, so it is not taken as seizing other heirs' rights. See limits on a will.
