Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #103

How can two families discuss splitting the reception costs without quarrelling?

Discuss it with real figures on the table, from the start, and let the bride and groom be the bridge between the two families. Quarrels usually arise when each side makes its own assumptions. Prepare a cost estimate for each event: the akad, the bride's family feast and the reception welcoming the new son- or daughter-in-law. Then ask, do not dictate: ‘How shall we divide this so it is fair?’ Respect local custom, but put affordability first. Record the agreement in the family message group so everyone refers to the same thing. Allah describes the believers: “their affairs are decided by mutual consultation among them” (Surah asy-Syura 42:38). See walimah.
