My child thinks they are the cause of our divorce. How do I reassure them?

Many children quietly blame themselves for their parents' divorce, so state clearly and repeatedly that it is absolutely not their fault. Say it directly: ‘This was a decision between Mama and Papa; it has nothing to do with anything you did, sweetheart.’ Give them room to express their feelings, and do not brush their sadness aside with words like ‘don't be sad’. Keep routines and affection consistent so they feel safe. Make sure both parents give the same message. If they stay low, withdraw or change at school, get help from a counsellor. Your reassurance and presence heal them slowly. See mental health.
