We married in southern Thailand and the marriage was also registered civilly. If we divorce, is a talak before the imam enough?
Not for the civil record: a marriage also registered civilly in Thailand must be dissolved civilly too, either by registering a divorce by consent at the district office or by court order.
In the four southern provinces that apply Islamic family law, talak, khulʿ and fasakh follow Islamic law, and disputed cases are decided by the court sitting with a Dato' Yutitham. But if the civil record is not updated, the couple remain recorded as married under Thai civil law (the Civil and Commercial Code). For Malaysians, a talak pronounced in Thailand for a marriage registered in Malaysia must be confirmed and registered at the state Syariah Court. Allah commands parting in a good way, with witnesses (at-Talaq 65:2). See Thailand.
